Designing Darshan Without Hardship

Wide processional paths, shaded queues, seating for elders, barrier-free routes — devotion, not endurance, should define a pilgrimage.

Anyone who has taken an Indian pilgrimage knows its two truths: the joy of darshan, and the hardship of reaching it. Long queues in the sun, stairs that defeat old knees, nowhere to sit, nowhere to rest. We have quietly accepted that devotion must be paid for in discomfort. Punyabhoomi is being designed on a different belief.

The elder at the centre of the drawing

Every plan at Punyabhoomi is tested against one imagined visitor: a grandmother in her seventies, walking with her family. Barrier-free routes, assisted darshan, shaded waiting courts with seating, rest areas at regular intervals, clean washrooms and drinking water throughout, and a planned 24×7 medical centre — these are not amenities added later; they are in the first drawing.

Families, together

Most sacred journeys quietly leave someone behind — the toddler who tires, the elder who cannot climb. The masterplan keeps families together: children’s gardens beside quiet courts, prasadalaya dining at scale, dharamshala courtyards where three generations can stay under one roof.

When the gates open, the measure of success will not only be the grandeur of the shikharas. It will be an eighty-year-old completing her darshan unhurried, unassisted and unexhausted — and asking when she can come again.

Punyabhoomi is a visionary destination currently under development in Nashik. It is not yet open to visitors, and no bookings or payments are taken. To receive milestone announcements, sign up on our website or write to seva@punyabhoomi.org.
