Green by Design: How Sustainability Shapes the Punyabhoomi Masterplan

There is an old contradiction in building for the divine: we raise structures to honour creation while exhausting the very land they stand on. Punyabhoomi is being planned to refuse that contradiction. Sustainability here is not a chapter added to the masterplan — it is one of the pens the masterplan is being drawn with.

Water, first and always

Nashik lives by the grace of the Godavari, and the masterplan treats water with the reverence it deserves. Rainwater harvesting across the campus, recharge zones under gardens and parking, and lakes designed to hold the monsoon are all envisioned so the destination gives water back to the land, not merely draws from it.

Sun, soil and shade

Solar fields are planned to power a meaningful share of the campus. Native trees — the species this soil has always known — are envisioned for the groves and the Nakshatra Van, because a banyan that belongs here needs no persuasion to thrive. Shade is treated as infrastructure: green corridors that cool the paths pilgrims will walk.

Moving without exhaust

Within the campus, electric shuttles are planned for those who need assistance, while the design keeps the most sacred journeys walkable. The quietest thing on a pilgrimage should be the mind — not the loudest thing an engine.

A destination built for generations must still be standing, green and generous, when those generations arrive. That is the standard the drawings are being held to.
